William F. Astle, MD, FRCS(c), is one of Canada's leading Pediatric Ophthalmologists.  He is the Director of the Vision Clinic at Alberta Children's Hospital and a full time Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Calgary.  In addition to his educational career, he is Director of an International Pediatric Ophthalmology Fellowship at the Hospital as well. He has trained at Stanford University, and at the prestigious Jules Stein Eye Institute, UCLA, in California, and today is author/co-author of over 100 publications to date.  Dr. Astle's specialty and research areas include children's laser refractive surgery, cataracts, pediatric glaucoma and how diabetes in children affects their eyes.  Dr. Astle works overseas as well, as a Medical Director of a children's foundation in Zambia.  In Zambia, he was essential in helping with a trachoma eradication program, a bacterial infection of the eye.  His work led to the creation of the Trachoma Initiative in this region.  In the past, he worked for King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as Chief of Pediatric Ophthalmology, and a past Field Medical Director for ORBIS International
